Poetry Competition & Talent Show Program on the Eve of Dashain

English Access Microscholarship Program, Gorkha Center, Gorkha, Nepal, organized a Creative Writing (poetry competition) and Talent Show Program on the Eve of Dashain Festival, 2011. Under Creative Writing Program, Access Students took part in Poetry Competition and under Talent Show Program they took part in Singing and Dancing Competitions. All students took part in poetry competition and each had to write an English poem on any theme and had to recite in front of the whole class. All the students wrote poems in different themes like nature, earth, river, flower, life and death, student life and access program. The basic aim of this competition was to find out their creative ability and writing style. The following students became the winners of the poetry competition.

Similarly ten students took part in singing competition and eight students took part in dancing competition. Sarita Baniya and Srijana Shrestha stood as the best singer and best dancer of the Access Class. Other students also performed well in the competition.

The program last for three and half hours.  Mr. Prem Thapa, the former advisor of NELTA, Gorkha Branch, Mrs. Harimaya Sharma, Chair, NELTA, Gorkha Branch, Mr. Sanjaya Adhikari Secretary, NELTA, Gorkha Branch were present as the guests in the program. The program was conducted by Mr. Kamal Raj Devkota, Access Instructor as well as Center Coordinator, Gorkha Center, Gorkha. Mr. Kedar Mani Aryal, Vice Chair, Gorkha Branch NELTA as well as Access Instructor, extended best wishes of Dashain to all the students, NELTA family Gorkha and all. In the program, the winners were awarded with prizes.

Cultural Program, Teej Special 2011

Dear all,
English Access Microscholarship Program, Gorkha Center Gorkha, organized a cultural program on the auspicious occasion of Teej Festival (Women's Day in Nepal) 2011. The program was held on 27th August. In the program, Mrs. Hari Maya Sharma, Chair, NELTA Gorkha, Mrs. Indra Kumari Devkota, President, Nepali Language Teachers' Association, Gorkha, Mr. Sanjaya Adhikari, secretary, NELTA Gorkha, Mr. Dhurba Shrestha, Executive Member, NELTA, Gorkha and Jyoti Sigdel, Life Member, NELTA, Gorkha, were the guests. The program was started with the welcome words expressed by Instructor as well as Center Coordinator Mr. Kamal Raj Devkota. All the students actively participated in the program. They all presented their talents by singing and dancing. All the guests, instructors and students wished each other and enjoyed fully. Competition among the students was also held and the winners were awarded the prize too. The program last for four hours. The organizer had managed snacks to all the students and guests too. Mr. Devkota concluded the program with the words of thanks to all for participating in the program.

About Gorkha ....

Gorkha is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal. It is located about 136 km far in the west of  Kathmandu, the Capital and 106 km far in the east of Pokhara, the second biggest city of the country.

Gorkha is a popular place for different reasons:

Historical Reason: Gorkha has a very glorious history. Some 245 years ago, Nepal was divided into 50 tiny states, and Gorkha was one of them. King Prithivi Narayan Shah, the king from ‘Shah Dynasty’ unified Nepal into one kingdom. His Gorkha Palace resides on the top of a hill at an altitude of 1000 meters even today. His generations ruled over Nepal for about 240 years. About three and half years back, the Constitutional Assembly (CA) voted overwhelmingly in favor of abolishing the monarchy and declaring republic.

Similarly, Gorkha is historically popular for its brave and legendary warriors who fought with knives against the guns. They took part in different wars including two destructive World Wars.

Geographical reasons: Geographically Gorkha is very famous in Nepal. It has geographic diversities. It has a number of mountain peaks in the northern part. It has many hills in the middle part and numbers big and small plains. There are many rivers that flow from north to south. Slop terrains from south to north add the beauty of this district.

Cultural reason: Gorkha is multicultural, multilingual and multi-religious district. Hindus, Muslim and Buddhist live in Gorkha. More than ten languages are spoken here. Most of the casts that Nepal has in general live here. They have their own cultural norms, values and practices.

Tourism: Gorkha is one of the important tourism centers of Nepal. It is full of beautiful places. Kalika temple, Manakamana temple, Gorkha Durbar, Ligligkot and so on are the famous religious and historical places here. Gorkha Municipality, Aarughat Bazaar, Barapak Village, Laprak Village and the northern part of this district are important for sight and scene. Mount Manasulu, Mount Ganesh etc are very enchanting mountains that speak the beauty of Gorkha

English Access Microshcolarship Program in Gorkha

English Access Microscholarship Program is a recently launched program in Nepal. This Program runs under the financial support of the Government of the US and technical support of Nepal English Language Teachers’ Association (NELTA). It provides microscholarships to the adolescents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The learners have the access of   learning English language and culture for two years. They will also have the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills.

Gorkha is one of the three different centers of this program in Nepal. Forty learners selected from the different public schools of Gorkha Municipality are studying in this center. Most of the learners are from backward communities. Four instructors are facilitating the learners. The office of the program is located in Gorkha Bazaar.
